چکیده

We have obtained deep photometric data in 24 fields along the southeast extension of the major axis of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal (Sgr dSph) galaxy, and in four fields along the northwest extension. Using star counts at the expected position of the Sgr upper main-sequence within the resulting color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), we unambiguously detect Sgr stars in the southeast over the range 10–34 from the galaxy’s center. If Sgr is symmetric, this implies a true major-axis diameter of at least 68, or nearly 30 kpc if all portions of Sgr are equally distant from the Sun. Star counts parallel to the galaxy’s minor-axis reveal that Sgr remains quite broad far from its center. This suggests that the outer portions of Sgr resemble a stream rather than an extension of the ellipsoidal inner regions of the galaxy. The inferred V-band surface brightness (SB) profile ranges from 27.3-30.5 mag arcsec over this radial range and exhibits a change in slope ∼ 20 from the center of Sgr. The scale length of the outer SB profile is 17.2, compared to 4.7 in the central region of Sgr. We speculate that this break in the SB profile represents a transition from the main body of Sgr to a more extended ‘Sgr stream’. By integrating the SB profile we estimate that the absolute visual magnitude of Sgr lies in the range −13.4 to −14.6, depending on the assumed structure of Sgr; an upper limit to the luminosity of Sgr is therefore L ∼ 5.8× 10 L⊙. This result lowers the M/LV ratio inferred for Sgr by Ibata et al. (1997) down to ∼10, consistent with values observed in the most luminous dSph companions of the Milky Way. The Physical Properties and Effective Temperature Scale of O-type Stars as a Function of Metallicity. II. Analysis of 20 More Magellanic Cloud Stars, and Results from the Complete Sample

In order to determine the physical properties of the hottest and most luminous stars, and understand how these properties change as a function of metallicity, we have analyzed HST/UV and high S/N optical spectra of an additional 20 Magellanic Cloud stars, doubling the sample presented in the first paper in this series. Our analysis uses NLTE line-blanketed models that include spherical extensio...

The Physical Properties and Effective Temperature Scale of O-type Stars as a Function of Metallicity. I. A Sample of 20 Stars in the Magellanic Clouds

We have obtained HST and ground-based observations of a sample of 20 O-type stars in the LMC and SMC, including six of the hottest massive stars known (subtypes O2-3) in the R136 cluster. In general, these data include (a) the HST UV spectra in order to measure the terminal velocities of the stellar winds, (b) high signal-to-noise, blue-optical data where the primary temperatureand gravity-sens...

Hα and continuum images are presented for 27 nearby early-type(Sa-Sab) spiral galaxies. Contrary to popular perception, the images reveal copious massive star formation in some of these galaxies. A determination of the Hα morphology and a measure of the Hα luminosity suggests that early-type spirals can be classified into two broad categories based on the luminosity of largest H II region in th...

A Radiometric All-Sky Infrared Camera (RASICAM) for DES/CTIO

A novel radiometric all-sky infrared camera [RASICAM] has been constructed to allow automated real-time quantitative assessment of night sky conditions for the Dark Energy Camera [DECam] located on the Blanco Telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. The camera is optimized to detect the position, motion and optical depth of thin, high (8-10km) cirrus clouds and contrai...

Southern Cosmology Survey Ii: Physical Properties of Sze-selected Galaxy Clusters

We present the optical and X-ray properties of four clusters recently discovered by the South Pole Telescope (SPT) using the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect (SZE). The four clusters are located in one of the common survey areas of the southern sky that is also being targeted by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and imaged by the CTIO Blanco 4-m telescope. Based on publicly available griz optical ...
